WHO’s work towards vaccine equity continues in Africa and beyond . 30 September 2021 Dr Matshidiso Moeti, Regional Director for Africa Region “Hundreds of WHO staff are on the ground, ready to support countries to expand vaccination sites and to manage the complexities of small deliveries of a variety of vaccines,“ WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti said. WHO continues its efforts to help roll out vaccines and fight COVID-19 on all fronts with the help of its donors and partners. Lesotho and Cameroon: Supporting communities with training, vaccination campaigns and fighting misinformation Published by WHO/AFRO on 17 September 2021 Myths and misinformation around COVID-19 vaccines are widespread in Lesotho. Over 85% of nearly 500 health workers surveyed recently reported widespread misconceptions. With support from WHO and the Christian Council of Lesotho, the Ministry of Health is training religious leaders to spread life-saving facts on COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccines. Six training sessions for 50 religious leaders have taken place in 5 of Lesotho’s 10 districts so far, which have all been hit hard by COVID-19. Published by WHO/AFRO in September 2021 Local leaders supported by WHO – working with over 2,300 community mobilizers and 1,450 vaccination teams – carried out a rapid COVID-19 vaccination drive of 52,000 people across Cameroon in just 5 days. Among other activities, the drive included workshops on mobilizing communities and strengthening advocacy and access to resources for immunization campaigns. The sessions were run by the Ministry of Public Health with WHO, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). South Africa and the Americas: Building regional capacity to produce vaccines Published by WHO/AFRO in September 2021 WHO, a?South African consortium and partners from COVAX are working to set-up a technology transfer hub for mRNA vaccines in South Africa t o help boost and scale up production in the African region. The hub will serve as a venue to teach African manufacturers to produce the vaccines locally, supporting the long-term plan of ensuring that Africa will be self-sufficient in making enough mRNA vaccines for its population. Currently, Africa imports around 90% of its vaccines. The WHO Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO) has announced the selection of 2 centers in Argentina and Brazil as regional hubs for the development and production of mRNA-based vaccines in Latin America in a bid to tackle COVID-19 and future infectious disease challenges.
