Now, writing in Nature , Meirzadeh et al. report the synthesis of a 2D crystalline polymer of C 60 molecules — a carbon allotrope combining sp 2 - and sp 3 -hybridized carbon atoms — in which C 60 molecules are arranged in a hexagonal manner. Each C 60 molecule forms eight covalent bonds with six neighbouring molecules, in a molecular plane. “The lattice geometry and relative number of sp 2 - versus sp 3 -hybridized carbon atoms will determine the optoelectronic and thermomechanical properties of these superatomic allotropes,” says Meirzadeh.
