The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which - like the sun - generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future. The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the division "Tokamak Theory (TOK)" a position for a Postdoctoral Physicist (m/f/d) as part of its junior researcher support programme.
Your tasks .
The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the applications group at the MPCDF and national as well as international project partners on the further development of the plasma turbulence code GENE for use on some of the world's most powerful supercomputers. .
The main task will be to develop, implement, and systematically analyze data compression and reduced-precision methods to accelerate data transfers and enhance the floating point performance in the code .
Your profile .
The applicant should hold a PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a similar subject. The option to conduct a PhD thesis in the context of the project is open for suitable candidates. .
A strong background in numerical methods, parallel programming, and software development is mandatory. .
Ideally, the candidate has experience with the development of large scientific codes and modern Fortran, and at least basic knowledge of GPU programming. .

The full-time position starts as soon as possible and is initially limited for a maximum period of three years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 (EG) according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TV?D Bund).
