Perovskite solar cells have demonstrated power conversion efficiencies of over 25%, but the devices tend to degrade after a few thousand hours of operation. Understanding failure modes of perovskite solar cells and improving their stability is crucial to their deployability. Accelerated ageing testing, which uses more severe stress conditions than real-world operating conditions, provides early indications of possible degradation modes and predictions of field lifetimes. Now, Yueh-Lin Loo and team at Princeton University and Link?ping University stress encapsulated all-inorganic CsPbI 3 solar cells with high temperatures up to 110°C and observe that iodide migration is the dominant degradation mechanism.
The researchers find that the incorporation of a two-dimensional Cs 2 PbI 2 Cl 2 capping layer on top of the inorganic perovskite slows down the degradation rate, while also boosting the power conversion efficiency. The capping layer suppresses the non-radiative recombination of charges, improving the open-circuit voltage, and passivates iodide vacancies. The latter is key to prevent thermally-activated migration of iodide out of the CsPbI 3 layer and hence afford enhanced stability. From the accelerated tests, Loo and team calculate the acceleration factor to relate the lifetime under accelerated conditions to standard operating conditions. Encouragingly, they predict lifetimes over five years for devices operated at 35°C. While field tests are needed to have a more accurate picture of real-world failure modes, the work provides valuable insights for improving the stability of perovskite solar cells.
